This is not a hobby.
Caring for dogs is my full time occupation as well as my passion. I am living my dream. As a young girl my favorite TV shows were the ones like the Littlest Hobo and Lassie. I always wanted to have a kennel of dogs. And now here I am. The kennel has been in operation since the early 90's when we bred and raced Siberian Huskies (hence the name DueNorth). Over the years people would ask us if we could look after their dogs and as we phased out our racing kennel people who knew our passion for dogs began to ask if we could do more boarding. Everyone kept saying "you're so good at looking after dogs". |
And so began DueNorth Pet Care, a perfect fit with my pediatric nursing backgroung and my favourite past time, showing, breeding and training dogs.
DueNorth Pet Care is a year-round, 365 day boarding facility located in the Kawartha Lakes area, servicing the Bancroft, Apsley, Havelock, Norwood, Nephton, Lakefield, Oshawa, Toronto and Peterborough area that provides boarding and board-and-train services to pet owners.
With respect to training our head trainer Pat Robertson writes:
I’ve been training dogs since I was a kid. I trained my first dog at the age of 12 years and got first place in a class of adults! I got serious about training 40 years ago when I got into horses. Horses became unwieldy with a growing family and a nursing career, so training dogs and kids became my focus. With the kids grown I really got serious about dog training over 30 years ago. Dog training has for me grown from hobby to a passion (some say obsession) and to full time career.
Throughout this evolution I have experimented with every method of training conceivable. You name the method, I’ve been to a seminar, workshop, training class or webinar about it. My dog library is comprehensive and well worn. Aggravating my obsession I also run a small boarding kennel and live with a number of my own dogs. (always less than 10) So, its dogs , dogs, dogs - 24 / 7 / 365. I know dogs! I have put all of these techniques to use with much success and have taken something from all of them, Having worked with so many dogs, I have learned that dogs, like people, all learn in different ways.
We strongly believe that dog training should be balanced. Like all things in life moderation is the hallmark of good training. We do not condone heavy handed training methods but we will also say "no" to dogs that make mistakes. To our way of thinking saying "no" simply provides dogs with information that they need to be well behaved canine citizens. If providing food for training produces results that create better understanding we are good with that as well.
My passion and focus now is on helping others to become successful with goals they have for their dogs. My strength is in being able to assess the dog and owner’s learning styles and apply my background of training methods to attain success with every dog that comes to me.
Clubs and associations come and go and through the years. I am a Member or Former member of:
Canadian Kennel Club (25 year member award)
Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers ( former board member for 6 years)
Flat Coated Retrievers Society of Canada (board member)
Flat Coated Retrievers Society of America
Founding Member of the Ontario Dog Trainers Group
Canine Good Neighbour - Evaluator
International Association of Canine Professionals (Former member and one of the first to earn Certified Dog Trainer designation.)
Peterborough and District Obedience Club - Past President (Resigned to focus on DueNorth Dog Training)
Ontario Federation of Sled Dog Sports (Resigned – I’m getting too old for that)
I hope that this lets you get to know me a little and that I can meet with you to discuss your goals for your dog.
OH YEAH AND: We have been rated as one of the top three dog trainers in Peterborough
